It was an honour to deliver my speech at the One Ocean Summit in Brest alongside President Macron, and announce the renewal of the Pew Bertarelli Ocean Legacy Program.
Krill form the basis of the marine food chain & help to combat climate change, storing the carbon equivalent of 35mio cars per year. While Antarctica's land area is protected, its seas aren't. Regulating krill fisheries would go a long way to protect ocean health. #WorldKrillDay
Lions are essential for healthy functioning ecosystems, but under threat due to habitat loss, illegal wildlife trade & climate change. It is vital to protect this species as part of the #30x30 goal of highly or fully protecting at least 30% of ocean & land by 2030! #WorldLionDay
A great new series on remarkable species by the @guardian – a true demonstration of how our #ocean nurtures unimaginable and incredible #biodiversity. First up, the scaly-foot #snail with the iron armour.
The #deepsea constitutes +90% of all living space on earth. Even if we do know more than ever there is still much to learn about the complexity & importance of its inhabitants. So, it's unsurprising yet fascinating that 30 new species have been discovered!
I believe in drastically limiting plastic use, yet efforts made by so many to clean our ocean & reduce the use of plastics are important. Professor Merico correctly says: “It’s not going to be quick, it’s not going to be cheap & it’s not going to be easy.”
