UNESCO – A Brave New Ocean

In my role as both UNCTAD Special Adviser for the Blue Economy and co-chair of the Bertarelli Foundation, I was invited to talk during “A Brave New Ocean”, a high-level virtual event organised by the Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission of UNESCO.

I participated as a panellist during a roundtable session entitled “Why the Ocean?”, which focused on the central role that the ocean plays for a sustainable and equitable future.

“The Science We Need For The Ocean We Want”; this event is part of the United Nations Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development. On 5 December 2017, the United Nations proclaimed a Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development, to be held from 2021 to 2030. This Decade will provide a common framework to ensure that ocean science can fully support countries’ actions to sustainably manage the Oceans and more particularly to achieve the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.
